That free invoice template I downloaded turned into a real mess
I used a free invoice template from a random site last month for a $1,200 project in Austin. Turns out it had a hidden macro that kept changing my totals after I sent it. Client paid $200 less and I had to spend two hours fixing the spreadsheet and apologizing. Now I just use Google Sheets with a simple formula I built myself. Anyone else get burned by free tools that looked too easy?

I downloaded one of those for a landscaping job in Phoenix and it swapped a 0 and a decimal on my labor costs. Ended up losing $150 before I caught it three weeks later. Learned my lesson hard way. Now I just use a plain text file with basic math and double check everything. Free stuff on random sites is usually a trap waiting to steal your time or money.

I got hit with something similar using a free mileage tracker from a site in 2021. It added 0.2 miles to every trip I logged for about six weeks before I noticed the odometer didn't match. Cost me around $80 in extra deductions I had to fix with the IRS when I filed. Total pain to go back through every single drive and redo the numbers. Now I just keep a running text file on my phone and verify everything manually at the end of each week. Those free template sites are not worth the risk even if they look professional.

I read a report a few months ago from some cybersecurity firm saying free invoice templates from unknown sites are one of the top ways small biz owners get hit with macro viruses. That hidden code thing you mentioned is exactly what they warned about. They said the macros can change numbers, redirect payments, or even lock your files for ransom. You probably dodged a bigger bullet than just losing $200. Google Sheets with your own formulas is the way to go.
