Had my phone stolen in Bangkok and it changed how I pack

I was grabbing street food near Khao San Road last Tuesday and someone swiped my phone right off the table. Lost all my maps, bank access, and my backup battery was in my backpack back at the hostel. How do you guys handle going completely offline for a day or two when you're in a new city?

Is it really that serious though? You were without your phone for a day or two, not stranded on a desert island.

Man, that's rough. I've been there. Now I keep a photocopy of my passport and one credit card hidden in a different pocket, plus I download offline maps for any city I'm in before I even leave the hostel.

Copped a tip from a travel vlogger who said to keep a printed list of key addresses and a backup sim card in your shoe. @matthewking says its not that serious but trust me, being stuck without maps in a place where streets change names every block is a nightmare. I now print out a mini guide with the hostel address and a few landmarks, plus store a photo of my passport in an encrypted email I can access from any computer. That way even if my phone gets ripped, I'm not completely lost for 48 hours.
