Had to ditch my favorite bank after 4 months of nomad life
I used to swear by Chase for everything. Thought it was fine for travel because they have branches everywhere. But when I got to Thailand in March, my debit card got blocked 3 times in one week for buying groceries. I spent 2 hours on Skype to their fraud department each time. Switched to a no-fee online bank last month and I haven't had a single freeze since. Has anyone else run into big bank problems while hopping countries like this?

I used to think big banks were the safe bet too, honestly, until my card got flagged in Portugal for buying a train ticket and I had to call from a hostel lobby at 2am. That was the moment I realized they just aren't built for people who move around like we do, no matter how many branches they claim to have. Now I'm with a no-fee online bank and the difference is wild, zero freezes and way less headache.

Yeah I was the same way honestly. I thought having a big bank like Wells Fargo meant I was covered anywhere. Then I got hit with three fraud alerts in Vietnam for buying street food and a bus ticket. Each time they'd lock my card and I'd have to call from a sketchy wifi cafe. After the third time I just gave up and switched to a online bank that doesn't even have physical branches. Night and day difference. No freezes, no phone calls, just works fine. Big banks are built for people who stay put, not for people moving around.

Tell those fraud departments to TRY actually traveling for once. They act like buying a bag of rice in Bangkok is some kind of CRIME. I had Citibank lock my card for buying a 50 cent mango from a street cart. Like come on, who's gonna hack my account for half a buck? Spent an hour on hold listening to elevator music while my fruit was melting in the tropical heat. Big banks are basically designed to ruin your trip, it's almost impressive how consistent they are at being useless.
