Took me 6 hours to figure out Vietnam's bank transfer system...
I just moved to Da Nang three weeks ago and thought I was being smart opening a local bank account for rent and food. Nobody told me that transferring money from my US account would take five business days minimum. I sat in the bank for almost two hours on day one just to get a temporary card that only works at certain ATMs. Then I found out the app is entirely in Vietnamese with no English toggle and I was clicking random buttons hoping for the best. It literally took me six hours across three trips to finally get a transfer to go through to my landlord. Has anyone else had this kind of headache with local banking as a new nomad?

Oh man, 6 hours? That's basically a full work day of bank frustration. I had almost the exact same nightmare when I moved to Ho Chi Minh City last year - spent 4 hours on my first transfer alone because the app kept timing out and giving me error messages in Vietnamese that I couldn't read. My landlord was texting me in all caps by day three because the rent was "pending" for a whole week. I swear the bank workers just smiled at me like I was a confused puppy every time I walked in. And don't get me started on the temporary card situation - I got one that only worked at the bank's own ATMs and I had to hunt down three different machines before it finally let me withdraw cash. The whole system feels like it was designed by someone who really hates foreigners, I'm not kidding.

jenny, I felt the "confused puppy" thing in my bones because I had the exact same experience with a teller who kept nodding and handing me forms in triplicate. @sanchez.julia's advice is solid though, I just wish someone had told me that before I tried to open an account using only hand gestures and broken Google Translate.

Download Timo or TPBank instead, their apps have full English support and international transfers process in under 24 hours. Open Digital Bank in Vietnam is way less headache than the traditional ones like Vietcombank or BIDV. A quick YouTube search for "Vietnam digital bank setup" will save you that six hours next time around.
