Got talked into trying woodworking after years of thinking it was just sawdust and swearing
Tbh I always rolled my eyes at friends who got super into building stuff. I thought it was just a way to justify buying expensive tools. Then last summer my buddy offered to let me try his lathe for an hour and I turned a decent bowl out of a chunk of pine. Something about seeing that shape come together clicked for me. Now I've got a $300 lathe in my garage and I've made like 12 bowls in 3 months. Anyone else find a hobby they wrote off for years actually hooked them?

My lathe only cost me $150 on Craigslist lol. But I get what you mean. It's funny how you can write something off for years then one little experience changes everything. I've noticed that with a lot of stuff lately, like how people say they hate cooking until they make one really good meal. It's like we have these ideas in our heads about what something is gonna be like and they're usually wrong. Your bowl story is pretty much exactly how my buddy got into metal detecting, he found a old silver ring on a beach vacation and now he's got $2000 worth of gear in his truck.

Found a pasta maker for $10 at a garage sale and now I'm cranking out fresh noodles twice a week lol.

I read somewhere that our brains are wired to assume hobbies we haven't tried are boring or frustrating because we compare them to stuff we're already good at. Did you ever think you'd be the guy with a dedicated lathe space?
