My neighbor's one comment about bird feeders changed my routine

Last Saturday, I was putting up a new feeder in the backyard when my neighbor across the fence said, "You know those cheap plastic ones will warp in the sun in about 3 months." He was right. I had been using the same $12 feeder from Walmart, and it was already looking rough after just 8 weeks. He showed me his old metal one that's been hanging for 5 years. Has anyone else had a random tip from a neighbor completely change how they do a hobby?

You ever try putting a steel wool pad under the feeder? Keeps the squirrels from climbing the pole.

Does that steel wool actually stop them or do they just chew through it eventually?
