That $250 embroidery machine I bought off Craigslist was a total scam
I saw this Brother machine listed for cheap. Met the guy in a parking lot near Millersville. Got it home and the tension was completely shot. Needed a $90 part and two days of fiddling to even stitch straight. Now it sits on my shelf mocking me. Should have just bought new from the store instead of chasing a deal. Has anyone else gotten burned buying used hobby gear?

Honestly, I've noticed this pattern everywhere, not just with hobby gear. It's like the whole "buy cheap, buy twice" thing but it's deeper than that. People think they're being smart by finding a deal, but they're really just paying someone else to take a risk off their hands. The guy who sold you that machine probably knew it was busted and passed the headache to you for a quick $250. It's kind of how a lot of stuff works now - everyone's trying to offload their problems onto someone else. Tbh, buying new feels like paying for peace of mind, not just the machine itself.

My buddy once bought a "like new" lawnmower off Facebook marketplace and it turned out the engine was held together with zip ties and hope. He spent the whole summer fixing it and still ended up just buying a new one from Home Depot anyway. Kinda makes you wonder if saving a few bucks upfront is really worth all the stress and headaches down the road.

Totally with you on that. It's like everything's become a game of hot potato with problems. I think about this with used cars too - people trade in a clunker right before the transmission goes, and then the next owner is stuck with the bill. @viola_garcia56 your buddy's lawnmower story is a perfect example, it's basically the same pattern playing out with anything mechanical or electronic these days. Makes you wonder what kind of junk we're all passing around without even realizing it.
