A client told me my invoices looked like a ransom note and I finally fixed them
Ngl, I had this one regular who paid on time but always complained she had to decipher my invoices. Last month she flat out said 'your layout is garbage, I can't find the due date or the total without hunting for it.' So I spent an hour copying a simple template from a freelancer I follow on YouTube, white background, bold headers, due date in red. Now three other clients have said the payments come faster. Anyone else find that a clean invoice is worth more than a fancy one?

You mean people actually paying faster just from a cleaner layout? Yeah I had the exact same thing happen when I switched to a super basic template with just the essentials. I used to cram a bunch of logos, fancy fonts, and a huge header that took up a third of the page thinking it looked professional. Turns out clients just wanted to see the amount, what they paid for, and a clear due date. I made mine look like a plain receipt with bold totals and a red due date box at the top right. Now I get less "where's the total?" emails and payments usually show up a few days sooner. Simple really does beat fancy when it comes to getting paid.

Right? I had a similar moment where I realized my invoices looked more like a wedding invitation than a bill. Basically just highlighted the total in bright red and put it at the top, now people actually know what to pay without a scavenger hunt.

Wish I could say I learned this lesson without sending out a few invoices that looked like a ransom note first. My clients probably thought I was charging them extra just for the confusion.
