Shoutout to the client who actually read my contract before signing

Back in March, I had a new client who took the time to read every line of my contract before signing. Most people just skim and sign, but she stopped on the late payment clause and said, "I see you charge 5% after 30 days. That's fair, but can we talk about it?" That opened up a real conversation about payment timelines. She ended up asking for net-15 instead of net-30, which I agreed to since she was upfront about it. We even set up automatic reminders through a simple invoicing tool. It made me wonder if more clients would pay on time if we just talked through the terms ahead of time like she did. Has anyone else had a client actually negotiate payment terms before starting a project?

Honestly, I used to think negotiating payment terms was just clients trying to get out of paying on time, but @knight.uma's lease story made me laugh and also made me realize how easy it is to miss stuff. Reading that post changed my mind a bit because this client wasn't trying to game me, she just wanted things clear from the start. Tbh, that conversation made the whole project smoother since we both knew what to expect with payments. Ngl, I bet a lot of late payments happen because people don't fully understand what they agreed to. That one client proved talking through the contract can actually build trust instead of causing problems.

Ha! That client already has better reading comprehension than me. I once signed a lease thinking it said "free parking" when it actually said "tire parking." My car got booted three times before I figured it out.

Wait, wait wait. Hold on. "Tire parking"? Like they literally wrote a clause about parking on tires? That's wild. I cannot believe you signed that without reading it properly, but honestly, I've done similar stuff. One time I almost signed a vendor contract that had a section about "gratuitous fees" and I just thought it meant they charged extra for being nice or something. It was actually about charging me for no reason at all. Man, that's a good lesson though. Reading stuff carefully is hard but it saves your backside every time. Your lease story is hilarious but also kind of scary.
