A loud pop from my rig made me rethink power supplies

My computer suddenly turned off with a popping sound last Tuesday. I opened it up and saw the power supply had burned out, and it fried my GPU too. I used to pick the lowest cost PSU for my builds, thinking it was fine. Now I always check for proper wattage and safety ratings, even if it costs a little more.

Learned that lesson after my third cheap unit let out its magic smoke. Guess I'm a slow learner when it comes to not frying my own parts.

Actually, 80 Plus ratings only measure efficiency, not safety or build quality. A Bronze unit can still have poor safety protections. Look for units that list specific protections like OCP and OVP on the box, not just the efficiency badge. It's an easy detail to miss when you're shopping.

Back in 2018, I had a similar scare when my PSU popped during a gaming session. It took out my motherboard and I lost a whole week of work. Now I always go for units with at least an 80 Plus Bronze rating, even if it means saving up a bit longer. That popping sound is something you never forget, right? What safety ratings do you look for now?
