Pro tip: My buddy warned me about that non-compete clause and I ignored him

A few months back this guy I know from the station told me to watch out for a super broad non-compete in a contract I was about to sign with a big client. I thought he was being paranoid so I just skimmed it and signed anyway. Fast forward to last week, I tried to pick up a small side gig in a different part of town and the original client threatened to sue me over it. Turns out the non-compete covered like a 50 mile radius and basically any kind of similar work. Now I'm stuck doing nothing extra for six months and out like $3k in potential income. Has anyone else ignored a red flag in a contract and paid for it big time?

I gotta say I see this a little different. You say the guy warned you about a "super broad non-compete" but really that's on you for not reading it yourself. I've signed my share of contracts and I always read every single line even if it takes an hour. That 50 mile radius thing would have jumped out at me right away. You kind of rolled the dice by skimming it and now you're paying the price. Next time maybe take that warning seriously and actually look at what you're signing.

50 miles isn't that far though, depends on where you live...
