Just realized my old property management software was double charging late fees for two years
Ngl, I thought the new software my partner pushed for was a waste of money, but after running the numbers last month I found over $800 in overcharges to tenants that the old system never flagged. Anyone else switch systems and find hidden billing errors that made you feel dumb for waiting?

Oh man, the real kicker nobody's mentioning is the liability side. If you overcharged tenants for two years and they find out, that opens you up to claims of unfair business practices or even treble damages in some states. I've heard horror stories where landlords had to pay back triple the overcharges because the judge didn't think it was a "simple mistake." So yeah, finding that $800 now might actually save you from a way bigger lawsuit later.

Say that's a pretty small number in the grand scheme of things. $800 over two years is basically a rounding error for most landlords. The real cost was probably your time digging through the old data plus the headache of explaining it to tenants who suddenly got credits. Frankly, the old system might have been doing you a favor by hiding those charges. Now you've got to fix the books, send apology emails, and hope nobody sues you. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss when you're running rentals.

Yeah, and honestly that $800 probably cost way more than that in headaches and lost time!
