Hot take: offering to "pay in exposure" for a $50 logo is actually insulting when the client drives a new SUV
Had a woman pull up to my studio in a 2024 Lexus last Tuesday and ask me to design her entire brand package for "future referrals." I pointed at her car and asked if the dealership took exposure as payment for the lease - she did not think it was funny.

Laughed out loud at this because I had a guy ask me to design his wedding invites for "exposure" last year and he showed up to drop off inspiration photos in a brand new Mercedes G-Wagon. I just stared at the keys in his hand and asked him if he'd want to trade that for a few thousand followers. He got real quiet real fast. The worst part is these people always act like they're doing you a favor by offering basically nothing.

The look on that guy's face must've been priceless when you called him out on the G-Wagon. Exposure doesn't pay for gas, let alone a mortgage. Next time someone offers me "future referrals" I'll ask if they accept them at the grocery store checkout line. Maybe we can start a whole new economy based on potential and maybe-someday promises. Would save a lot of people from ever having to open their wallets.
