PSA: My $250 dryer repair turned into $700 when the tech broke the control board

Has anyone else had a repair person mess something up and still charge you full price?

$250 dryer repair turned into $700" sounds like you got ripped off before the tech even touched anything.

You're spot on, @sanchez.ivan. They hit me with the same kind of bait and switch last year for my washer. Quoted $180 over the phone, then the guy gets here and suddenly it's a different part and the price jumps to $600 with no warning. I felt stuck because I already took the day off work to wait for him. The worst part was he finished in maybe 30 minutes and charged for a full hour of "diagnostic labor" on top of it. Shoulda just told him to leave and bought a new machine, honestly. Never using those big name repair companies again, they just count on people not knowing any better.

Honestly, I get why it feels like a rip-off but $250 for a dryer repair was probably never realistic to begin with. Most service calls include a trip charge and diagnostic fee that runs $80 to $150, so if they found a bad motor or control board, parts alone can hit $300 or more. Ngl, the 30 minute fix and full hour billing sucks, but a lot of companies do that flat rate labor thing to cover drive time and overhead. Tbh, if the dryer is fixed and running now, $700 might be high but it's not out of line with what most shops charge once you factor in the actual repair.
