That 'exposure' gig ended up costing me $200 in supplies last spring

I took a local brewery's website refresh for 'portfolio building' and they wanted three rounds of wireframes plus custom illustrations. Has anyone else had a client try to sneak work into a free project like that?

The funny thing is this isn't just about design work, it happens everywhere now. My buddy's a plumber and people constantly ask him to "just take a quick look" at their leaky pipe while he's at a party, then get shocked when he hands them a business card instead. That whole culture of expecting professionals to trade their skills for "exposure" has just bled into every industry. It's like people forgot that time and materials actually cost money.

Who actually pays their bills with exposure?

So then what does that plumber friend tell them when they get pushback? Is he polite about it or does he just walk away?
