Had a cousin ask me why I charge $75/hr for editing when Fiverr has people at $15
She said I should just match those rates to get more jobs... I tried explaining turnaround time and quality but she kept bringing up how her friend got a whole book proofed for $50. Has anyone else had family treat your rates like they're negotiable?

and it's not just editing either, it's everything now... people see the lowest price online and think that's what things should cost, like a plumber who charges $200 an hour is just greedy compared to the guy on Craigslist who'll do it for fifty bucks. you end up having to explain that cheap work usually means someone cut corners or doesn't have insurance, but they just look at you like you're making excuses. my sister does the same thing with my photography rates, saying her friend's cousin got wedding photos for three hundred dollars and they look fine from across the room. it's like they don't get that you're selling your experience and time, not just a number on a screen. guess some people are just wired to see the sticker price and nothing else.

Honestly, the "looks fine from across the room" thing made me actually laugh out loud, that's such a killer line. Ngl, I've heard that exact same excuse from people about everything from haircuts to car repairs, and it's wild they think that's a good defense. Like yeah, from twenty feet away in bad lighting, a lot of things look okay, but that's not the point of paying a professional. Tbh, that line probably works on them because they've never had to stand close to their own work and see all the little mistakes. The whole "fine from across the room" mentality is exactly why some people end up with shoddy work they'll have to pay twice to fix later.

The "looks fine from across the room" comment hits so close to home, @emma_lee22. I tell people they're paying for the 10 years it took me to learn when to walk away from a bad job. Have you tried asking them what they'd charge for 50 hours of their own time?
