Just stopped taking jobs with no written scope of work after getting burned on a $2200 kitchen remodel

I used to just text a price and shake on it, but after a client added 9 extra tasks mid-project without paying more, I now send a 3-page scope doc before I even touch a tool. Has anyone else had a handshake deal blow up in their face like that?

...and that's exactly why I won't touch a job without a signed scope anymore. I had a guy try to turn a simple bathroom tile job into a full gut and rewire because he "figured I'd just handle it" since we shook hands. Save yourself the headache, get everything in writing before you even buy materials.

Did he actually try to stiff you on payment after all that extra work got done?

That 9 extra tasks situation was the wakeup call I needed. I used to think a handshake was good enough but now I'm all about that written scope before anything.
