Spent 2 hours tracking down a missing file, turns out I saved it in the wrong folder

I was ready to submit a Fiverr order and couldn't find the final PSD anywhere. After digging through my downloads folder and recycling bin, I realized I put it in a folder named 'old stuff' by accident. Has anyone else wasted a whole afternoon because of bad file naming?

3 months ago I had a client ask for a revision on a logo, spent 45 minutes looking for the source file, and it turned out I named it "logo_final_v2_actualfinal_v3" or something stupid like that. I ended up wasting a whole afternoon because I couldn't tell which version was the real one. Now I just put the date in the file name so I know when I last touched it, and I keep everything in one folder for each job.

Oh man, that "old stuff" folder is a trap I fall into all the time. Same thing happened to me last week, I had a file named "project_final_v2_forreal" and spent an hour digging through backups only to find it sitting in a random subfolder I forgot existed. The date trick is smart though, I started doing that too and it saves so much hassle.
