PSA: Checked out the refi rates at a local credit union in Austin and found a hidden gem

I walked into University Federal Credit Union last Tuesday and they offered me a 5.8% refi rate with no origination fee, way better than the big banks I'd been calling. Anyone else have luck skipping the online calculators and just talking to a real person at a smaller lender?

Just went through this last month over at Velocity Credit Union here in Austin. Walked in and told them what I wanted, got a 5.7% refi with no points which none of the online places would match. The guy at the desk actually pulled up my credit and explained where I could save a few bucks on the appraisal too... way more straightforward than dealing with the big bank websites.

Oh please, credit unions aren't some magic wand for everyone, @finleym37. You got lucky with that 5.7% rate and a helpful guy, but most people walk into those places and get the same boilerplate junk they'd get online, just with more waiting and less coffee. That "straightforward" desk guy probably just wanted to sell you on their insurance add-ons or a fancy checking account. Online lenders have way more options and you can compare like 20 rates in 20 minutes without having to drive somewhere and shake hands. The big bank websites might be annoying, but at least they don't waste your afternoon sitting in a plastic chair watching someone type slowly.
