The day my color theory professor called me out in front of 30 people

I was three years into freelancing illustration and thought I knew what looked good. Then this old professor from community college stopped by my booth at a local art fair in Austin and asked why I always used the same three warm tones. I told him it was my 'style' but he just laughed and said it looked like I was afraid of blue. He was right. I had been avoiding cool colors since 2018 because one client told me my work was too cold. Has anyone else had a teacher or mentor randomly show up and blow up your whole process?

Oh wow, that honestly made me rethink my whole color approach too.

yeah i had the same "oh wait" moment a few years back when i was working on a big living room project. what really clicked for me was testing paint samples on actual walls - those tiny swatches in the store are so misleading. i literally painted like 8 different squares before landing on the right shade. also if you're doing a whole room, try keeping the undertones of your flooring and furniture in mind, it saved me from painting twice.

Bought a color wheel and made myself try every blue-green combination for a month.
