That $200 'freelance masterclass' that taught me nothing new

I dumped two hundred bucks on a six-week course about scaling your freelance business during slow months last January, but it was just rehashed advice about making more social media posts and 'hustling harder.' I ended up actually losing money because I spent those six weeks watching videos instead of hitting up old clients or doing the cheap grunt work that pays the bills. Has anyone else shelled out for a big-ticket resource that ended up being a total dud when you needed real survival tips?

That $200 could have paid for a month of groceries or your internet bill. Six weeks of videos instead of actually working is a rough trade off. Those big courses are usually just repackaged blog posts from five years ago. Real survival tips come from doing the work, not watching someone talk about doing it.

Wait, is it REALLY true that those six weeks meant you were just sitting there passively watching? Because I've been there and I know the trap - you think you're being productive but really you're just procrastinating on the real scary stuff like calling people. That $200 might not have been a complete loss if you can salvage even ONE solid tip from it, but I get why it feels like a scam. The thing is, most of these courses are built for people who ALREADY have clients and just need a little polish, not for folks in survival mode. You probably needed something way more basic like a checklist for cold emails or a script for follow-ups. Next time you're tempted, try dropping $20 on a single issue of a freelancing magazine or a used book from five years ago - same advice for way less money.
