Always thought networking groups were a waste until I joined one in Portland last fall

I used to think those business networking meetups were just people passing out cards and not actually helping each other. But after a dry October with zero new leads, I went to this free one at a library downtown. A guy who does web design passed me a referral that turned into a $1,200 project in two weeks. Now I go every month and I've gotten three gigs from it total. Has anyone else had luck with local groups or are most of them still just awkward breakfasts?

Showing up is the easy part, sticking around when the opportunity sucks is the real gamble.
