Went to that big coffee shop downtown and noticed nobody talks about rates anymore

I was sitting at Brew & Bean on 5th Street last Tuesday, and I heard two freelancers at the next table comparing their hourly rates. One was charging $25, the other $85 for basically the same graphic design work. It got me thinking about how we never discuss pricing in this group, but it's the main thing that determines if slow season hits you hard. Has anyone else noticed a huge range in what people are charging in your city?

Right there with you... I was in a co-working space last month and overheard a web designer saying she charges $150 an hour while her friend across the table does sites for $30. It's wild how much it varies.

Man, that really shows how different markets and client types can be. The $150 person is probably selling more than just a website - they're selling strategy, setup, maybe ongoing support that the $30 person skips. It's not always about luck, it's about who you're pitching to and what you're actually offering.

Wonder what the $85 guy is doing different to justify that gap, or if he's just getting lucky with clients who don't shop around?
