Used to think paying quarterly taxes early was throwing money away

Last April I had a $2,300 bill hit all at once because I waited and spent the set aside cash on a new laptop. Now I just pay the minimum each quarter as soon as the IRS opens payment, keeps me from dipping into it.

Yeah the "throwing money away" thing is what got me too. I just did the math wrong, thought I'd be better off holding onto it. Then I bought something stupid with it and learned the hard way.

Did the exact same thing with my quarterly payments back in 2021. Thought I was being smart keeping that cash in my checking account earning nothing, then I saw a deal on a fancy espresso machine and convinced myself I'd just make it up next quarter... never did. Ended up selling the machine on Craigslist for half what I paid to cover the tax bill. Now I just autopay the minimum as soon as the quarter starts, total set it and forget it. It's like paying myself a little bit each time instead of one giant gut punch.
