Had to redo my whole garage shelving because I forgot about stud spacing

I spent a whole Sunday putting up these heavy duty shelves I got from Home Depot, spaced them out to fit all my bins perfectly. But I didn't check where the studs were first, just used drywall anchors. Long story short, after two weeks the whole thing sagged and I had to take it all down. It took me another 4 hours to redo it right, drilling into the studs and patching all the anchor holes. Has anyone else made that dumb mistake or just me?

Spreading the load" yeah right, that's what I told myself too. @abby_fisher you nailed it about cursing the weird stud placement, mine were 19 inches apart on one wall because the previous owner added a half bath and hid his framing hack job. Grab a magnetic stud finder for next time, they're like 15 bucks and save you that whole redo drama.

Oh man, the drywall anchor special. I feel your pain so much right now. Those little plastic anchors have betrayed more DIY projects than I can count. I once hung a pegboard the exact same way, thought I was being clever by spreading the load, and woke up to my tools scattered all over the garage floor at 3 AM. It's like our brains just go "studs? nah, who needs 'em" until gravity reminds us who's boss. Did you at least get to curse the previous homeowner's weird stud spacing while you were fixing it?

Wait, did you find any hidden surprises behind the drywall?
