My $70 'space saving' shoe rack turned into a disaster zone
I bought one of those over-the-door shoe racks thinking it would clear up my closet floor. It held about 12 pairs before the top hook ripped clean off the door frame and everything crashed down at 2 AM. Has anyone found a shoe storage solution that actually stays put?

and then it all comes crashing down at 2 in the morning, that's the worst... I've been through that exact thing with those over-the-door racks. They just don't hold up, especially if your door isn't solid wood. What finally worked for me was getting one of those freestanding metal racks that sits on the floor, like the ones they use in stores. It's not fancy but it's held 20 pairs of shoes for two years now without a single wobble. Just make sure to screw it into the wall if you have kids or pets, because those things can tip over too if you're not careful.

I picked up one of those cheap wooden shelf things from target that just leans against the wall and it's been a game changer for me. My cats kept knocking over the over the door ones anyway because they'd try to climb them at night.

See I actually had the exact opposite experience with those over-the-door racks. I've had one on a hollow core closet door for like 4 years now and it hasn't budged once, I just had to get the right hooks and make sure I wasn't overloading it with heavy boots or anything. Those floor racks you mentioned are a pain because they take up so much space in a small room, and if you live in an apartment you can't always screw things into the wall without losing your deposit.
