Chose quarterly payments over a big refund after my accountant crunched the numbers in Portland
I always liked getting that fat check in spring, but when she showed me the $340 I lost to penalties last year by underpaying every quarter, I switched on the spot, and now I'm just curious if anyone else feels that same sting when they see their effective rate.

...and honestly that $340 felt less like a wake-up call and more like a tax guy prank where I’m the punchline. I did the same math after my own accountant showed me the light, but my version involved me staring at a spreadsheet so hard I think I confused the numbers into submission. Now I just pay a little every three months and tell myself I’m being “financially disciplined,” which is basically what I say when I forget to pick up milk but remember to pay the IRS. The big refund was fake joy anyway, like finding a $20 bill in your coat only to realize it was your own money the whole time.
