TIL my $200 tax prep software wasn't actually prepping anything

Used TurboTax for 5 years and thought I was good. Realized I missed $3,200 in home office deductions when a CPA friend reviewed my last return. Any of you switched from software to a real accountant for your freelance taxes?

This is just like when I bought an expensive bread machine thinking I'd save money on bakery bread, but it turns out I still had to actually LEARN how to bake. We really convince ourselves that spending MORE money means we don't have to do the hard work. Your CPA friend literally SAVED you money by doing what the software pretended to do. It's the same reason I stopped using those meal kit services - they charged extra but I still had to chop the onions myself.

The bread machine thing is a perfect example, we think the tool does the hard part but it just skips one step and leaves the rest to us. Funny how the CPA friend ended up being the real shortcut, not the expensive software.

Real talk, always find the person not the product. Saves you time and money.
