The debate over charging for initial consultations is getting old
I see people going back and forth on whether to charge for the first meeting with a client. In roofing, I charge $50 for an estimate and it weeds out the tire kickers who waste my time, but some folks say they get more business by keeping it free. What has worked better for you, charging upfront or letting the first chat be on the house?

Honestly I charge $75 for estimates and it actually works better.

Wait, $75 for an estimate is really "working better" or just making you feel better about your time?

Feel like that just chases people away though. $75 for a quote means a lot of homeowners will skip you and go with someone who does it for free. A quick walkthrough and a ballpark number on the spot usually gets them to bite without making them feel like they're paying just to talk to you.
