I finally stopped ignoring the feedback on my portfolio intro
A client in Portland told me my About page sounded like a robot wrote it, which stung because I thought it was professional. I rewrote it to tell the story of how I started freelancing after getting laid off in 2019, and the difference is night and day. Got two new inquiries within a week of swapping it out, so I guess the old version was really that flat. Has anyone else gotten feedback that made you redo something you were sure was fine?

Honestly I was gonna chime in on the other side of this. Those story driven About pages are everywhere now, every freelancer is doing the whole "here's my journey" thing and honestly it reads just as robotic to me, just a different flavor of it. You traded corporate robot for inspirational robot. And let's be real, your clients in Portland probably like it because it feels more human, but that doesn't mean it's actually good, it means they're tired of the same old corporate junk everyone else is pushing. If you had kept it professional and it was actually clear, you'd have gotten clients who wanted you for your work, not because you had a sad sack story about getting laid off. That said, glad it's working for you, but I wouldn't toss the old version entirely, the next client might prefer the one that sounds like a robot lol.

Two new inquiries, huh? That's a pretty small sample size to be drawing big conclusions from. You could've hit two people who just happened to be looking for a freelancer that week, you know? I'm not saying the story version is bad, but calling the old one flat just because two people wrote you back seems like a stretch. And honestly, the whole "got laid off in 2019" thing... that's a super common story, so you might've just swapped one cliché for another. Maybe give it a couple months and see if those kinds of clients actually turn into paying work, or if they just like a good sob story. Not trying to rain on your parade, just saying two emails doesn't prove much.
