Hit $150 an hour and felt guilty about it for a week

I specialize in technical writing for medical software companies. Last month I raised my rate to $150 an hour after a client kept pushing for faster turnaround. I thought people would push back or cancel. Instead two new referrals came in and nobody even blinked. Has anyone else found that your own fear about raising rates is the real barrier, not the market?

Classic case of rate anxiety. Charge what you're worth.

But doesn't "worth" mean different things to different people?

You really hit on something there. Worth is different for everyone depending on where they are in life and what they need. Some people care more about money, others care about feeling respected or having freedom. That's why comparing yourself to others is such a trap, you never know what their situation actually is. At the end of the day you gotta figure out what matters to you and charge for that, not for what someone else thinks.
