Rant: wasted $85 on a logo contest that gave me garbage

I paid 85 bucks on a design contest site for my new freelance brand and got back 30 entries that looked like clip art from 1998. The winner picked a font I can't even use commercially so now I'm stuck paying a real designer double that to fix it. Has anyone here actually gotten usable work from those crowd contests?

The "clip art from 1998" part hit me SO hard because I went through this exact same mess last year. I ran a contest for my own brand's logo and got 30 entries where half of them had those cheesy swoosh gradients that looked like they were made in Microsoft Word. And then the winning font thing? I spent an extra 200 bucks because the designer used a typeface that required a license I didn't have. It's honestly such a scam because you think you're saving money but you end up paying MORE in the long run. I totally feel your frustration on this one.

Saw a designer on Twitter say those sites just cannibalize other winning entries so you rarely get anything original.

Did you check if the site hides their top designers from public view on purpose?
