Overheard a vet tech complaining about PayPal's 3.49% and it clicked for me

I was waiting at the animal clinic in Boise yesterday and two vet techs were talking about taking deposits for pet sitting on the side. One said PayPal's 3.49% plus 49 cents was eating her whole $40 cat checkup fee, so she was just taking cash and Venmo now. That got me thinking about how I do same for my Fiverr gigs, I always switch to direct invoicing after the first order but never did the math on the cut. I ran my last 12 payments and lost about $86 total to those tiny percentage fees that add up on $15 and $20 jobs. Has anyone else found a way to nudge repeat buyers off platform without breaking the rules?
