The time it took me to switch from PayPal to a proper payment processor

You ever have that moment where you just stare at your screen wondering if you're gonna get paid this month? That was me. I had a small side hustle selling custom prints, nothing crazy, and PayPal just locked my account for "review." No explanation, no timeline, just a loading bar that felt like it was mocking me. It took three weeks to get my money back, and by then I'd already lost a few customers who got tired of waiting. The fees being a little higher for a real processor is totally worth it when you can actually talk to someone who can fix your problem in a day instead of a month. I've never looked back since I switched, and I tell anyone starting out to skip the headache and go straight to a proper setup.

PayPal is fine for most people starting out. The real problem is people trying to run a legit business through a platform meant for casual eBay sales and friend payments. A proper processor gives you chargeback protection, faster payouts, and better reporting. Stick with PayPal long enough and you'll eventually get a random hold on thousands of dollars with no warning.

Funny how @zarag17 mentioned the random holds because that's exactly what got me to switch. You're right that PayPal works fine until it doesn't. I knew someone who had $3,000 frozen for six months over a "suspicious transaction" that was just a repeat customer. The real kicker is they don't tell you what triggered it or how to fix it fast. A proper merchant account might cost a little more in fees but at least you get a phone number to call when things go sideways.
