Tried a family friend for plumbing vs a random pro on Thumbtack. Night and day difference.

I had a leaky pipe under my sink last month, and my mom insisted we call her buddy Dave who does plumbing on the side. Dave showed up 3 hours late and charged me $100 to say he'd need parts. Then I hired a guy off Thumbtack with 50 reviews the next day. He fixed it in 45 minutes with the right parts in his van for $85 total. Has anyone else had way better luck with random pros over family referrals?

Dave probably thinks his time is worth more than his work is.

Is he actually delivering quality work though? Because if his results speak for themselves then maybe he's right. But if his output is just average, then yeah, he's overvaluing his time.

Read somewhere that people who are overconfident about their time's worth tend to be the ones who haven't had their work truly tested yet... The article made a point about how skill and confidence don't always line up in the real world. Guess Dave's finding that out now.
