Three months ago someone told me my hero image was too dark and it changed my bounce rate
I was at a local coworking meetup in Portland and a graphic designer named Jen offered to look at my freelance site. She pointed out my main photo was so dark it looked like a silhouette, and she said visitors would click away in 2 seconds. I swapped it out for a brighter shot with better contrast, and my bounce rate dropped from 68% to 41% in just one week. Has anyone else had a tiny design fix make that big of a difference on their portfolio site?

And it's not just about the photo being bright enough either. Once you start thinking about that first impression, you realize the whole top half of your page is basically a handshake. If that handshake feels cold or dead or like you don't care, people just leave because they assume your work will be the same way. Margaretc42 hit it exactly right - you don't have to look like a model, you just have to look like someone who actually exists in the real world during daylight hours. That shift from "mysterious shadow person" to "approachable human" probably signals way more about your reliability and energy than we give it credit for. Bounce rate is just people voting with their clicks about how much they trust you in the first few seconds.

Changed my photo from "vampire in a cave" to "person who actually gets sunlight" and suddenly people WANTED to hire me. Who knew.
