Wasted 8 months trusting Google PageSpeed Insights over real user data

I kept tweaking my portfolio layout to get a 95+ score, but actual visitors in Chicago were still bouncing after 10 seconds. Switched to monitoring real user clicks with a heatmap tool, and my contact form conversions went up 30% in 2 weeks. Has anyone else found performance benchmarks misleading for actual lead generation?

Yeah I gotta call something out here. Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights measure lab data in a controlled environment, not real world conditions on actual devices. They simulate a middle range phone on a slow connection but your Chicago visitors might be on fiber with a brand new iPhone. So tweaking for a 95 score was probably chasing numbers that don't match what people actually experience. Real user monitoring like heatmaps or Core Web Vitals from Chrome User Experience Report gives you the actual loading times and interaction delays your visitors face. That data is way more useful for figuring out why people bounce because it captures their specific network and hardware.

Man I was totally in the same boat last year, spent like 3 months chasing a green Lighthouse score on my photography site. @michael_williams you nailed it with the lab vs real world thing. I finally checked CrUX data and found 60% of my visitors were on fast home WiFi, not 3G like PageSpeed assumed. Once I stopped obsessing over that score and just used a free real user monitoring tool to track actual load times, my bounce rate dropped from 70% to 45% in a month. It's wild how much time I wasted on fake numbers when the real problem was a slow hero image that only showed up in certain network conditions.

60% of visitors on decent WiFi is basically the norm for most niche sites, not just photography ones. Chasing that green score made me realize my real issue was the hero image loading slow for people on older phones even with good WiFi.
