Debating if a standing desk mat is worth it or just hype
Had a convo with my neighbor last week who swore her $50 balance mat fixed her knee pain, but my brother says he just uses an old rug and feels fine. Now I'm stuck wondering if the fancy foam stuff actually helps or if it's all marketing fluff. Anyone here noticed a real difference after switching to a proper mat?

My neighbor swears by her fancy mat too, but I was in your shoes last year. I grabbed a cheap memory foam one from Target for like 25 bucks and honestly, it made a huge difference for me. My lower back used to ache after a few hours standing up, and with the mat, I can go almost the whole day without stiffness. The key for me was getting one with a little bit of a bump or texture to keep my feet moving. Your brother might be onto something with the rug, but the foam really does take the shock off your joints.

Did the bumpy texture ever feel weird under your feet at first? I've been thinking about grabbing one of those cheap foam mats myself, my knees are just done after a day in the kitchen.

Honestly, my first standing mat made me feel like I was standing on a deflated pool float, but after a week my knees stopped complaining so I dealt with it. @anna717, the bumpy texture caught me off guard at first too, kind of like walking on a giant Lego brick, but now I can't stand flat surfaces. My buddy swore his $60 ergonomic mat was a game changer, meanwhile I grabbed a basic $20 one at a discount store and it saved my lower back. The trick for me was finding something with a slight edge so I'm not accidentally rolling off it like a clumsy seal. Ngl, I tried using a bath mat once and ended up sliding halfway across the room, so I'd say the foam is worth it if you don't want to look like a fool.
