My standing desk was a $700 waste for 8 months

Used to think sitting was fine. Got a pricey standing desk last spring. Hated it at first. My back hurt more standing. Felt like a dumb purchase. Then I added a cheap anti-fatigue mat from Target for $25. Night and day. Now I stand 4 hours a day easy. Anyone else take forever to figure out the right setup?

barbaradavis asked if the mat fixed my back pain or just made it bearable. The answer is it basically fixed it. The mat lets me shift my weight around without thinking about it, and the slight cushion takes the pressure off my heels and lower back. Standing on hard floor is torture, the mat makes it feel like you're on a soft trail. I still sit for half the day, but now I can do 4 hours standing in chunks without my back screaming. The mat is the real secret to the standing desk, not the desk itself.

Oh yeah @ray_burns, a good mat totally saved my standing desk setup too.

Huh, did the mat actually fix your back pain or just make it bearable?
