Can we talk about how home office deductions aren't always worth it?

I was at a freelance meetup in Portland last March and this CPA guy straight up told me most people claiming the home office deduction get audited. He said the IRS flags it because everyone claims a 200 square foot room with a computer. I used to think it was free money, but after he explained how it can mess up your capital gains when you sell your house, I stopped doing it. Last year I skipped the deduction and my tax guy said my return was way cleaner. Has anyone else backed off from claiming this even though everyone says to do it?

Buddy of mine claimed it and the IRS took two years to sort him out.

Bet he’s still waiting on that refund with interest.
