Warning: paying quarterly taxes the same way for 3 years almost cost me $2,000
I used to just guess my quarterly payments based on last year's income, no adjustments. This year I actually sat down and did the math after a client paid me $8,500 in one big chunk in November. Now I use a simple spreadsheet that tracks each invoice and updates my estimated tax in real time. Anyone else get blindsided by a big single payment like that?

Got hit with a $12,000 payment in December one year and it totally wrecked my quarterly estimates. That spreadsheet idea is genius, I'm stealing it.

Wait, has anyone thought about how the IRS handles this if you accidentally overpay? I mean, yeah, the big payment wrecking your estimate sucks, but last year I overpaid by like $1,800 because I freaked out and put too much aside. Then I had to wait forever for them to send it back, and they didn't even pay me interest on that money I loaned them for free. So maybe the real trick is aiming for a tiny underpayment instead of dead on, so you're not letting them sit on your cash for months. But I get it, that $8,500 hit would've thrown me off too if I didn't catch it early.
