Subbed vs. dubbed for a rewatch, picked subs and regretted it

Finally decided to rewatch an old favorite last week and chose the subbed version this time because everyone says it's the 'real' experience. Turned out I kept missing the action on screen while reading the dialogue, especially during a big fight scene in episode 4. Has anyone else had that problem, or do you just get used to it after a few episodes?

Rant: I've been mispronouncing the name of my favorite anime for 8 months

I've been calling Jujutsu Kaisen "Joo-joot-soo Kye-sen" out loud during watch parties, and nobody corrected me until my cousin from Osaka heard me say it last Friday. He just laughed and said the second word is "Kai-sen," and now I'm wondering how many other basic names I've butchered in front of the group. Accidentally binged the dub and now I cant go back

I watched subbed anime for like 7 years straight, since 2018, and I told everyone dubs were trash without ever really giving them a fair shot. Then last week my friend put on the Honey Lemon Soda dub while we were eating and I caught myself laughing at the timing way more than I ever did reading subtitles. Am I wrong for thinking some dubs actually capture the vibe better, or did I just brainwash myself into a fake preference this whole time?

My Blu-ray player died mid-episode, so I finished the whole series on my laptop screen

The player gave out at 2am on a Tuesday during episode 7 of a 26 episode mecha show, and I spent the next three weeks hunched over a 13 inch screen at my kitchen table, but honestly the smaller picture forced me to notice background details I'd have totally missed on the big TV, has anyone else had a viewing setup fail turn into a better experience?

Took me six hours across two days to figure out the sidebar's spoiler rule only applies to new posts, not edits, so my warning about episode 7's ending got deleted twice and I spoiled it for three people in the comments anyway, has anyone else had their post vanish like that?

TIL my friend's 2-hour anime recap rule changed how I watch everything

I was chatting with my buddy Dan last Thursday night about the new season drops. He told me he never starts a show until a week after it finishes airing, then he watches 2 episodes a day max. At first I laughed, said that's way too slow. But he explained he got burned out binging 12 episodes in one sitting and forgot half the plot by episode 8. That hit different because I did the exact same thing with that big mecha series last spring. I couldn't tell you what happened in episodes 5 through 9 without checking a wiki. Now I'm trying his method with the current mystery anime, and I actually remember character names week to week. Has anyone else slowed down their watch pace on purpose, or am I just becoming an old man about this?

I finally stopped skipping the recap episodes after a bad rewatch

Just wasted $120 on that 4K remaster box set, the audio mix is atrocious

I picked up the limited edition of that classic mecha show from the 80s last month, the one everyone raves about. Paid 120 bucks for it and the picture is fine but the sound is a mess, half the explosions drown out the dialogue and the new English dub changes the tone completely. The original Japanese track is the only way to go, but even that has weird sync issues on disc 3. Anyone else get burned by a 'definitive' release that just feels like a cash grab?

I finally tried watching anime with a friend who talks through every scene

Last Sunday my buddy Mark came over and he never stops commenting during shows. We put on an old mecha series I'd seen before, but his running commentary made it feel COMPLETELY new. He kept pointing out background details and animation shortcuts I never noticed in 3 rewatches. After 6 episodes I realized I was enjoying the show MORE with his interruptions than alone. Now I'm wondering if I've been watching anime wrong this whole time. Has anyone else had their viewing experience totally changed by someone who won't shut up?

I mocked the filler episode compilations, now they're my favorite thing

For years I thought those 'all filler in 10 minutes' videos were just for people too lazy to watch the actual show. Then I hit episode 140 of a long running series and realized I had forgotten half the beach episodes anyway. Now I use them to refresh before a new season drops, saves me about 8 hours total and I actually catch jokes I missed the first time. Does anyone else do this or am I just rewatching the same clips on a loop like a weirdo?

Finally noticed the sub count on the manga pages in berserk, blows my mind every time

I kept seeing people complain about the pacing in the golden age arc and I always nodded along. Then I actually paid attention to the chapter release dates and realized Miura was putting out like 3 to 4 chapters a year for a while there. That's not slow storytelling, that's just a guy working at human speed on something massive. I counted it out after looking at the wiki timeline and it hit me around chapter 200 where the hiatuses really stacked up. Anyone else ever take the time to map out the real release gaps for a long running series and change your whole view on it?

Reached episode 300 in my backlog and almost quit anime entirely

I keep a spreadsheet of everything I watch. Got to episode 300 logged last Tuesday and something snapped. I realized I had spent over 100 hours on shows I barely remembered. I've been a hardcore sub-only guy since 2018, swore dubs ruined the pacing every time. Then I tried the English dub of that new mecha series last Tuesday and actually caught more character nuance, now I'm questioning my whole stance. Anyone else found a dub that beat the original?

Hot take: I doubted 4K remasters of old anime, then I watched one from 1989

I spent years thinking 4K remasters were just cash grabs, especially for shows made before digital animation. Then I picked up a 1989 OVA on Blu-ray last week and the cel detail was insane, like seeing the paint layers for the first time. But I still think some studios overdo the noise reduction and it kills the original texture. Does anyone else feel like the remaster quality depends more on the company than the era of the show? Rolled my eyes when a buddy swore by the 3 episode rule for judging new anime, but after dropping shows after one episode for years I finally gave it a real shot.

I gave Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood a solid three episodes last month even though the first one felt slow and now I'm 40 episodes deep and can't stop - has anyone else had a show totally flip for them after a few episodes?

Hot take: the 'skip intro' button ruined anime pacing

I was watching a marathon of Cowboy Bebop with my buddy and he hit skip intro every single time. That's 26 episodes of TANK! just gone. I get it for shows with bad intros but skipping the buildup feels like watching a movie with no opening scene.

Question about the episode count for the original Fullmetal Alchemist

I was looking up something on MyAnimeList last night and saw the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist series only has 51 episodes. For some reason I always thought it was closer to 60 or 70, like a full shonen run. Am I the only one who gets the episode counts mixed up between the original and Brotherhood?

Binge watched a 2003 mecha anime in one weekend and it aged way better than I expected

The animation was clunky and the dub was terrible but the political plot actually made more sense to me now at 32 than it did when I was 15 - has anyone else gone back to an old show and found it hit different as an adult?
