Appreciation post: I thought slice of life anime was boring until I watched 'March Comes in Like a Lion'

For years, I avoided shows without big fights or magic systems, thinking they were just about nothing happening. My friend kept telling me to watch 'March Comes in Like a Lion', and I finally gave in last month. The first episode felt slow, but by the third, I was completely hooked. It's not about shogi, it's about the main character's loneliness and the family that takes him in. The way it shows his quiet pain and small moments of comfort hit me harder than any battle scene ever has. It completely changed my view on what makes a story good. Has anyone else had an anime genre they totally misjudged? What show proved you wrong?

Oh man, that's so real. I was the exact same way with sports anime for the longest time. I figured they were all just the same tournament arcs over and over. Then I watched Haikyuu, and it completely wrecked me. The character growth and the sheer hype of the matches got me so invested. It taught me that any genre can be amazing if the characters feel real.

Haikyuu was good but it's still just volleyball with extra feelings.

Yeah the "just volleyball with extra feelings" thing is so true for how we talk about stuff. We do that with everything, like calling a great meal "just food" or a moving song "just some chords." It's a way to sound chill but it misses the point. The feelings and the craft are what make it matter, whether it's a sport or a show about one.
