My sketchbook is full of arrows and quick character panels from Attack on Titan. It stops me from blanking on plot twists when our club meets up. Your visual aid idea is basically the upgraded version of my messy system.

Try keeping a small notebook just for quick show notes. I used to forget everything until I started jotting down one weird detail per episode. It builds up without feeling like homework.
