Took me way too long to figure out what 'filler' actually meant in anime

When I first got into anime, I kept hearing people complain about filler arcs but I thought it just meant episodes that weren't very good. It wasn't until I binged Naruto and hit like 80 episodes in a row of random side missions that I realized it meant stuff not from the manga. Took me about 3 weeks of confusion before my buddy Steve finally set me straight. Anyone else have a dumb anime term they misunderstood for way longer than they'd like to admit?

Filler just means bad episodes" is actually how I still see it, since skipping canon material feels like cheating.

You ever sit through a whole episode thinking "this is it?" and then realize it was filler the whole time? My friend @adam186 actually binged an old shonen show last month and got so mad at a random beach episode he threw his controller across the room. Now he checks filler lists before starting any anime, calls it his "life insurance" against bad time waste.
