Had a chat with a plumber that made me see my own job in a new light

I was fixing a dishwasher in a tight kitchen, and the house plumber was there for a leaky sink. We got talking about the weird stuff we find. He said, 'You know, you appliance guys are like doctors for the house. We plumbers are the gut doctors, you're the brain doctors. You deal with all the little wires and computer chips telling things what to do.' I'd never thought of it like that before. It hit different because I spend most days just trying to get a machine to stop beeping or start heating. But he's right. The amount of times I'm staring at a tiny control board with a multimeter, it really is more about the signals than the pipes. Made me feel a bit better about those tough jobs where nothing makes sense at first. Anyone else ever get a fresh take on the trade from someone in a different line of work?

Totally get that. Had a similar talk with an HVAC guy once. He called my pest control work being a "wildlife bouncer" for people's homes, which honestly made me laugh but also kinda stuck. I'm just checking traps and sealing holes, but he framed it like I'm the guy keeping the riff-raff raccoons and mice from crashing the party. It does change how you see the daily grind when someone gives it a fresh name like that.

Right? That wildlife bouncer thing is perfect. My buddy's a plumber and his boss calls him a "liquid logistics engineer," which is just moving water and fixing leaks. Makes the whole job sound way more epic.

So are we all just fancy janitors for different parts of a house?
