I finally asked the guy at the parts counter in Akron why he keeps a fridge door gasket behind the register
Stopped by a supply house over on Grant Street last Tuesday to grab a defrost timer for a Whirlpool, and the older fella behind the counter had a used door gasket hanging off a hook right next to the register. I asked him why he'd waste the shelf space, and he told me he's kept one there for 19 years because nine out of ten folks who walk in swearing their fridge won't cool are really just dealing with a gasket that's gone flat. He said he hands it to them to hold up against their own door as a test, and if it doesn't suck in tight they buy a new one on the spot. I tried it on a Maytag I was sure had a bad compressor, and sure enough the door was the whole problem. That one trick saved me a callback and a $60 part I didn't need. Now I keep a spare gasket in the van just so I can show people. Any of you keep a beat up part on hand just to prove a point to a customer?
