I thought those magnetic water softeners were just snake oil for years.
A customer in Fort Worth insisted his unit stopped his dishwasher from spotting, so I tested the water hardness before and after a month. The numbers didn't budge, but the glasses were actually clearer, so maybe it's doing something to the minerals? Has anyone else run into a job where the fix made no sense but still seemed to work?

You said the numbers didn't budge but the glasses were clearer. That's the kind of thing that makes me crazy. I had a call for a fridge making noise, and the only thing that fixed it was wedging a folded paper towel under one leg. No new parts, just a paper towel. The science says it shouldn't work, but the noise stopped. Sometimes the fix is just weird.

My old boss at the appliance shop called those "sympathy fixes." We had a washing machine that would only stop shaking if you put a specific 3-pound dumbbell on the top left corner. I mean, it makes no sense, but you stop asking why after the tenth house call. Sometimes the machine just wants to feel level, even if your laser tool says it already is. That paper towel trick is a classic for a reason.
