My neighbor swore by a trick for fixing a Kenmore washer that just clicks

He told me to check the lid switch first, but after I spent 45 minutes taking the top off, it tested fine. I moved on to the timer and found the real problem, a burnt contact. I wasted a whole morning because I listened to his 'always start with the lid switch' rule. Anyone else get stuck on a simple tip that just didn't apply?

Actually, that advice is solid most of the time. A failed lid switch is the single most common reason for a click and no start on those older Kenmores. Starting with the most likely fix saves more time than it wastes. You just hit the statistical outlier. Following a good diagnostic order is still smarter than randomly picking parts.

Know exactly how that feels. Following the "right" order only to find the problem in the last place you look is the worst kind of Monday morning. It makes you want to kick the stupid machine (not that I'd actually do that, you know). Solidarity on the burnt timer contact, that's a real headache find after all that work. The good advice definitely backfires sometimes, and it's just plain frustrating.

Statistical outlier" is a nice way to say you got unlucky. It's still a huge pain when you follow the common advice and it's wrong. I feel your pain on that wasted morning.
