Remember when fixing things meant actually listening to them?
I was cleaning out my old toolbox and found my mechanical stethoscope. Used it all the time to find noisy bearings in motors. Now everything has a digital error code that tells you exactly what's wrong, or at least it tries to. You don't really have to figure out the sound of a bad pump anymore. It's handy, but I kinda miss that part of the job. It felt more like you were finding the problem yourself. You know what I mean?

But don't error codes sometimes point to the wrong thing? I've seen them send people on wild goose chases before.

Yeah error codes are basically just the computer's best guess at what's wrong. The real problem is they often point to a general system failure instead of the actual broken part. Seen so many people replace entire motherboards when it was just a loose cable the whole time. Makes you wonder if the codes are meant to help us or just cover the manufacturer's butt.

Manufacturer codes saved my laptop last week, @miaprice.

Blue screen error codes like 'PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA' sound scary, but they're usually fixable! I've found that following the code leads to the right fix nine times out of ten. It's rare that they point you totally wrong. Most goose chases happen when people skip basic checks first.
